accent wall surface types

Beyond their sophisticated appearance, our surfaces are perfect for any kitchen and bathroom space.

QUARTZ

Quartz countertops are no longer the kitchen’s best-kept-secret. They have become one of the most popular choices on the market. Made of a blend of approximately 95% quartz and 5% resin, these countertops come in a limitless number of beautiful designs and colors and, best of all, laugh in the face of stains, scratches, and chipping. Because they are not a natural stone, they are non-porous. Therefore, liquids and bacteria will not penetrate its surface. You can count on their safety and sustainability for years to come. Quartz maintenance is probably one of its best attributes. Why? All you need is a quick wipe with mild soap and water, and they’re back to their shiny fabulous selves – no special potions or yearly sealing required!

Soapstone

Soapstone has become a very popular choice over the past five years. Soapstone is a natural material made of talc, chlorite, and dolomite and it gets its name from its smooth, soapy texture, but it is actually very hard. It’s also famous for its beautiful lived-in aesthetic. Its appeal suits many home styles, from farmhouse to urban. Most often, its color range is from gray to black with white or gray veining. It’s resistant to staining, heat, chemicals, acid, and mold and is 100% eco-conscious! It never needs to be sealed. With a periodic quick application of mineral oil every few months, your soapstone countertops will develop a dark patina and enhance the natural aging process over time.

Granite

Granite countertops are a popular choice for many homeowners due to their exceptional durability and timeless appeal. Granite is a natural stone formed as magma deep inside the earth. Each slab is unique, boasting a variety of colors and patterns that can enhance any kitchen or bathroom design. Known for its hardness and resistance to scratches, heat, and acid, granite is an excellent surface for daily cooking and entertaining. Its popular finishes are honed, antiqued, and polished, all adding a luxurious touch to any space, making it a centerpiece in home design. While granite countertops require periodic sealing to maintain their luster and protect against stains, the effort is minimal. With proper care, granite countertops can remain stunning and resilient for decades, making them a wise investment for any home.

Marble

Marble countertops are a luxurious and elegant choice, renowned for their stunning veining and sophisticated beauty. Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from limestone, and while it is slightly softer than granite, marble provides a unique charm with its smooth, cool surface, making it ideal for baking and pastry preparation. The natural elegance of marble adds a high-end appeal to any home, reflecting a unique character and sense of refinement. Maintaining your marble countertops will require a bit more due diligence, as they are prone to staining and etching from acidic substances. Regular sealing and gentle cleaning are essential to preserve their pristine condition. With the right care, marble countertops can become a lasting statement piece in your home, combining beauty with functionality.

QUARTZite

Quartzite countertops are an excellent choice for those seeking both durability and natural beauty in their home surfaces. Quartzite is a natural stone formed from sandstone and subjected to intense heat and pressure, resulting in a hard and dense material. Its durability rivals that of granite, making it highly resistant to scratches and heat, ideal for busy kitchens. Quartzite's appearance is often characterized by its striking, marble-like veining and a wide range of colors, providing a sophisticated and elegant look to any space. Despite its robust nature, quartzite does require periodic sealing to maintain its resistance to staining. Quartzite countertops offer a stunning and practical solution that can elevate the aesthetic of any home while standing up to daily wear and tear.

Quartz

DAILY LIFE WITH QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS

Quartz countertops can indeed look like natural stone, offering the aesthetic appeal of marble, granite, or limestone with the added benefits of increased durability and lower maintenance. This makes quartz a popular choice for homeowners who want the look of natural stone without the upkeep. Thanks to advancements in modern technology, quartz showcases intricate veining and color variations almost indistinguishable from real marble or granite at a glance.

Yes! Quartz is an excellent choice for maintaining a hygienic and low-maintenance kitchen or bathroom environment. Quartz countertops are non-porous, meaning they do not have tiny pores or holes where bacteria, mold, and mildew can hide and grow. This makes them more hygienic and easier to keep clean. In contrast, natural stone like granite or marble is porous and can harbor bacteria if not properly sealed and maintained.

Pure White, whether cool or warm tones with or without soft grays and brown veining. Soft warm grays that mimic stone or concrete. Earthy Neutrals in warm beige and taupe shades. Bold, dark hues such as deep black and navy.

All finishes are popular with quartz tops. Polished, matte, and for black quartz, textured finishes are very much in style.

While quartz is heat resistant, it is not completely heatproof. It's advisable to use trivets or hot pads to protect the surface from direct heat exposure, which can cause damage or discoloration.

Even though quartz countertops are engineered from natural quartz and resins which makes them durable and resistant to scratches, the resin component is softer than the quartz itself. Therefore we recommend using a cutting board to protect both your countertop and your knives.

Choosing between quartz and quartzite depends on your preferences for appearance, maintenance, and durability. Quartz offers consistency and low maintenance, while quartzite provides natural beauty and exceptional hardness with a bit more upkeep.

Quartz is engineered from natural quartz and resins, while quartzite is a natural metamorphic rock. Quartz comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns, uniform and customizable. Quartzite boasts natural beauty with unique veining and patterns, often resembling marble. Quartz is non-porous, and resistant to stains, scratches, and bacteria, while quartzite is extremely hard, and heat-resistant but is porous and requires sealing. Quartz countertops will never need to be sealed.

Soapstone

DAILY LIFE WITH SOAPSTONE COUNTERTOPS

Both materials are natural stones and they are highly heat-resistant and prized for their beauty and elegance. They are both prone to scratching and etching however, their cool-to-the-touch smooth surfaces are great for baking. On the other hand, their differences are more distinguished. Soapstone is a non-porous natural stone resistant to stains, moisture, and bacteria. Marble is porous and will require regular sealing to prevent etching, stains, and bacteria growth. Soapstone requires minimal maintenance and can be treated with mineral oil periodically to enhance its natural patina effect, however, it isn’t necessary.

Light to dark grays, deep rich green hues, and dark black that will patina over time are very sought-after looks. In all colors, subtle veining is a must, and aged or weathered finishes in deep black soapstone are widely popular.

Yes! Soapstone is a good option for outdoor kitchens. Its natural resistance to heat and stains, along with its non-porous nature, makes it a durable choice for outdoor environments. One thing to note, soapstone will develop a natural patina over time when exposed to the elements, which many find appealing.

We would advise against it. Cutting directly on soapstone can leave scratches and gouges. However, minor scratches can often be sanded out and the surface re-oiled to restore its appearance.

As we all are leaning into eco-friendly and sustainable products, soapstone has often been referred to as “Nature’s best gift to your home”. Once quarried, soapstone is minimally processed; no water is needed during the mining. Soapstone is delivered in its natural state. It doesn’t have to be shipped to Italy or China for finishing, saving on gas and other transportation pollutants. Materials that require less processing use less energy, and so have less impact. Soapstone is a non-porous natural stone resistant to heat, moisture, bacteria, and acidic liquids. They are durable and although they will not crack easily, they will scratch due to their soft and smooth texture. One of the best aspects of having soapstone countertops is that they are a great investment. If selling your home, can expect to get a 50% return on your soapstone investment!

Granite

DAILY LIFE WITH GRANITE COUNTERTOPS

Yes! Granite is incredibly durable and resistant to scratches, heat, acid, and everyday wear and tear. It's an ideal choice for kitchens and high-traffic areas.

Yes, granite countertops should be sealed periodically, usually once a year, to maintain their stain resistance and preserve their natural beauty.

Granite is an excellent choice for outdoor kitchens or bars. Its natural durability and resistance to heat, scratches, and weather elements make it ideal for outdoor use. Ensure proper sealing to protect against stains and weather damage.

White and Off-White, Warm Greys, Earth Tones such as warm browns and beiges, and Deep blacks.

Textured Finishes: Leathered or antiqued and honed finishes are trending for their tactile appeal and understated look. Black granites are also trending in polished.

Simply put, yes, but your knives may not!

For the Countertop: While granite can withstand the impact of cutting, repeated cutting directly on the surface can dull your knives over time. The hardness of granite is greater than that of most knife blades, which can cause the blades to become blunt more quickly.

For Your Knives: Cutting on granite is more likely to damage your knives than the countertop itself. Using a cutting board is recommended to preserve the sharpness of your blades.

Cleaning granite countertops is simple. Use a mild dish soap and warm water for daily cleaning, and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Regular sealing helps maintain the stone’s integrity and appearance.

Marble

DAILY LIFE WITH MARBLE COUNTERTOPS

While marble is durable, it is a softer natural stone and more susceptible to scratching and staining compared to granite and quartzite. It’s best suited for low-traffic areas or places where its aesthetic can be appreciated without heavy use.

If you love the look of marble and that outweighs the maintenance they require in a bathroom, then, yes! However, it's important to know that marble is porous and can be prone to staining from common bathroom products like toothpaste, makeup, and hair dye. If low maintenance is a priority, you might consider other materials like quartz or granite that offer greater durability and ease of care.

Classic Whites with warm or cool greys are timeless, Dramatic blacks, and creamy Warm tones.

Matte or honed finishes are trending over high-gloss for a more contemporary and clean look.

If you are cooking on them every day then yes. Clean your marble with a pH-neutral cleaner and soft cloth. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the surface. Regular sealing and prompt cleaning of spills help maintain its appearance. Also, sealing your marble is crucial to prevent staining and etching. Depending on the type of marble and its use, sealing may be required every few months.

Yes, minor scratches and stains can often be polished out by a professional. Deep scratches or significant stains may require more extensive restoration work. We suggest to always use a cutting board to protect both the countertop and your knives.

Some say yes, however, there’s no real proof of this. It really comes down to the buyer’s perception and what they need and want in a countertop. While marble is a high-end stone and considered a luxury, it does require intentional maintenance and care. Some homeowners are looking for a beautiful countertop that is durable and low maintenance. Many real estate professionals say that having any type of natural stone countertop can result in a 200% return on investment.

Quartzite

DAILY LIFE WITH QUARTZITE COUNTERTOPS

Like granite and marble, quartzite countertops should be sealed to prevent staining and maintain their appearance. Sealing typically needs to be done once a year.

Granite is an excellent choice for outdoor kitchens or bars. Its natural durability and resistance to heat, scratches, and weather elements make it ideal for outdoor use. Ensure proper sealing to protect against stains and weather damage.

Soft neutrals, cool whites, and bold blues and greens are very popular colors now. Quartzite’s trending patterns are marble-like veining, natural flowing organic lines, and most are finished in a polished or high-gloss to accentuate the beautiful colors and movement in the stone.

We recommend using a non-acidic, low-pH cleanser such as mild soap and water or stone-specific cleaners easily found at your local retailer. Do NOT use heavy-duty scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, or bleach on quartzite or any other natural stone. Chemical cleaners such as Windex, 409, and Simple Green will strip the sealer away, leaving your surface unprotected.

Yes! Quartzite’s natural heat resistance makes it a great choice for fireplace surrounds. It’s durability and resistance to color fading from the sun makes quartzite a popular choice for outdoor kitchens as well.

COUNTERTOP INSPIRATION

With almost 30 years experience, our management team and craftsman installers provide unmatched expertise when it comes to executing projects with the utmost professionalism and attention to detail.

WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER STONE TOP INSTALLATION

CUSTOMER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INSPECTION OF THE ACTUAL MATERIAL PRIOR TO WORK COMMENCEMENT. BRIAN’S FLOORING IS NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THE PURCHASER DOES NOT INSPECT THE MATERIAL BEFORE THE INSTALLATION.

  1. Prior to the laser template date, please remove all items sitting on your countertops. This must be done only by the homeowner and before the template tech arrives.
  2. Please clean off countertops and remove drawers prior to installation. If you desire to empty your cabinets you may, but it is not necessary.
  3. Installation will be noisy and dusty.
  4. Tear-out of your existing countertops may rip dry-wall paper or bust existing tile splashes. This is unavoidable sometimes in demolition/construction projects.
  5. We may ding, scuff, and/or scrape walls and/or cabinets due to the necessary tight fit of the countertops. You may need to use some touch-up paint after installation is complete.
  6. We may need to cut drywall for the stone to fit and align properly. This should be hidden by the countertop or the backsplash.
  7. We may have to remove door trim, shelving, or other obstructions to get countertops onto the cabinets.
  8. Your cabinets may be unfinished behind existing countertop drop edges.
  9. Your walls may be unfinished behind existing countertops or splashes.
  10. The install crew may have to turn your water off in order to remove your existing sink. The plumber will turn this back on at the plumbing hook-up.
  11. Upper cabinets sitting on countertops may need to be cut around the bottom for the thick stone countertop to slide underneath.
  12. We always install stone countertops level so there may be gaps between the stone countertops and your cabinets due to unlevel cabinets.
  13. Stone splashes are straight and do not bend. Walls typically have some bow so there may be gaps between the stone splash and the wall. This may require an extra caulk application by the homeowner due to the initial caulk application possibly 'sinking' once it dries.
  14. The install crew may have to make a return trip to your house for stone splashes that are to fit under mirrors, windows, or bar tops.
  15. Bath faucet plungers that pull at an angle may hit tight against stone splashes. Your plumber can pull your faucet forward to create more room.
  16. Stone is typically cut to be flush to cabinets around freestanding stoves. There may be a gap between the stone countertop and your stove after installation.
  17. If you have chosen a Granite, Quartzite, or Marble top, you will need to apply a sealant once it is installed. Brian’s is not responsible for this.
